NEW SARAJEVO MUNICIPALITY


The area of the Municipality of Novo Sarajevo includes the central part of the Sarajevo Field, a fertile valley located between the high mountains of Bjelašnica, Igman and Trebević. It covers an area of 9.9 square kilometers, within the geographical coordinates 43.526 N and 18.243 E, at an average altitude of 500 meters.
Municipality of Novo Sarajevo is one of the nine municipalities of the Sarajevo Canton and one of the four municipalities of the City of Sarajevo.
The history of Novo Sarajevo, or some parts of today's Municipality of Novo Sarajevo, as the official urban territory began in the nineties of the nineteenth century, when the Austro-Hungarian government reorganized the former territorial structure of the city and the newly established settlement (the area of today's Dolac local community) united with the Pofalići mahala. The whole area was named Gradski Pofalići and became part of Koševo District, one of the seven city districts. Since then, during the next hundred and more years, the mentioned settlement follows the fate of the City and undergos numerous reorganizations in the administrative sense.
According to the 1991 census, the Municipality of Novo Sarajevo covered an area of 47.15 square kilometers. There were about 95,000 inhabitants in that area. After the 1992-1995 war, with the new organization of the City of Sarajevo, the Municipality of Novo Sarajevo covers an area of 11.43 square kilometers. According to the 2004 assessment, there are about 75,000 inhabitants in the Municipality of Novo Sarajevo.
Municipality of Novo Sarajevo was created as a result of large-scale construction and development of the city in the sixties and seventies of the 20th century. It is located between the Municipality of Centar and the Municipality of Novi Grad.
Before the war, the Municipality of Novo Sarajevo was one of the most developed in Bosnia and Herzegovina. About 40% of the workforce was employed in industry. During the war (1992-1995), the economy was completely destroyed. Ten years after the Dayton Agreement, the restructuring of the economy, restoration of destroyed capacities and privatization are being carried out in the municipality.
Today, Novo Sarajevo municipality belongs to the most developed municipalities of the Federation of BiH. The municipality is an urban, administrative, cultural, educational, health and business center of the City of Sarajevo.
The municipality of Novo Sarajevo today includes the area of inhabited places within the following local communities: Dolac, Čengić-Vila I, Čengić-Vila II, Gornji Kovačići, Gornji Velešići, Grbavica I, Grbavica II, Hrasno, Hrasno Brdo, Kvadrant, Kovačići, Malta, Pofalići, Pofalići II, Trg Heroja, Velešići, Vraca and Željeznička.
